At what age can I start?
A unique aspect of Kendo is that there is no set starting age for Kendo in Japan, children as young as 5 have begun Kendo and older participants in their 60s.
At Fudoshin Kendo Australia, we primarily receive inquiries from adult beginners. While we have welcomed children in the past and fully support them taking up kendo, we have found that their learning environment needs to be uniquely nurturing. Striking this balance in a club primarily composed of adults can be challenging. Therefore, we have decided that our classes are best suited for individuals aged 15 and above. This allows us to provide the best possible kendo experience. That said, there are many clubs offering excellent options for younger children to start kendo. We are more than happy to provide recommendations and introductions to other clubs catering for children.
What equipment do I need to start?
To start kendo all you need are some comfy clothes and a willing attitude. Soon after starting you will have to factor in the cost of purchasing a 'shinai' (the bamboo sword we train with). Shinai prices and sizes vary a little bit depending on a couple of factors - generally size 39 for adults, (with differing weights between ladies and gents) and smaller for kids depending on age and physical size. They typically cost between $55 - $90. Our club does sometimes purchase a bulk lot and may have some available when you are ready.
Where can I purchase Kendo equipment from?
Ordering Kendo equipment for the first time can be complicated and a little daunting to make sure you get the correct gear. We have our own club suppliers, who can help you will all your kendo needs. Alternatively, you are very welcome to source your own gear and there are number of very good online suppliers. We do highly recommend speaking with senior club members prior to making any purchases to ensure suitability.
